Hi Charlie, great to hear you enjoyed the piece! That’s a very interesting point about custom pricing: of course, some clients will be happy to pay more for your to drop everything and work on something for them. If you can manage that while appeasing the rest of your client base, custom pricing is a no-brainer!

As to your point about citations, it’s an interesting one but I would say both options are available: we offer our citation building services direct to businesses, and Marketing Agents use our software to deliver citations to their clients. A lot of clients/businesses would prefer to have somebody complete the task for them, therefore as the agent we need to take into account the time and resources needed to complete the task, and also factor in ongoing management of citations to determine an appropriate price for the service.

By providing the service yourself, whether marking up or not, you’re providing added value for the client and showing expertise without necessarily revealing the secret sauce that powers your citation building efforts.

We have used a flat monthly fee that includes a certain number of hours based on which team member is doing the work that month. It works fine but isn’t that easy to explain so I was interested to see some of the other approaches.

I have tried to have predefined plans in the past but never felt like it worked well. Now we always do custom pricing for each client. The issue was that some clients are much more time intensive than others even when offering the same suite of services.

I interpreted the question about marking up citations a little differently. If we are Bright Local customers and pick out the relevant citations and then pay Bright Local to build them, is it easier for the client pay Bright Local directly or pass those costs along to the client with a markup? We have done both so I am curious if you have any thoughts.

I agree that there isn’t really a clear cut answer on how everyone should price things out. There are so many variables based on the number of location(s), where those location(a) are, industry, services offered, competitive landscape, etc.

Over time, we’ve found that what works for us is to set monthly minimums based on what our goals are. Instead of asking:

What should we charge for our services?

We ask ourselves:

Who needs & can afford our services?
